Discover the beautiful Baroque city of Vilnius, Lithuania, which has been described as "The Prague of the Baltics". The Old Town is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and contains beautifully preserved Roman and Orthodox churches, the oldest dating to 1320 before Lithuania converted to Christianity. Vilnius University, founded in 1579, is the oldest university in Eastern Europe and has 12 interior courtyards.
Jewish Vilnius (Vilna) was known as "the Jerusalem of the North" and was the home of the great Gaon of Vilna, the famed Yiddish institute of Higher learning (YIVO), and the birthplace of the violinist Jasha Heifetz, whose house is still standing.
Nearby sites include the fairy tale 14-15 century Trakai Castle, former capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Druskininkai health spa region with its unique mud baths, the Soviet Theme Park with statues and monuments preserved from the Soviet occupation of Lithuania. The Baltic sea coast is know for its beautiful white sand and amber. The Hill of Crosses, with over 400,000 carvings, statues and religious artifacts, was a monument to Lithuania's resistance of the Soviet occupation.
